Hi, I just bought and installed the student version of MATLAB in order to try some exercises for a test this week.
I installed the software R2008b on the c-drive on a English version of Windows XP.
As far as I can tell the latest version of Java is installed (becuase this is updated automatically).

However, when starting the program, the activation overview windows produces the following error after 'Connecting to The Mathworks'.

Any one any idea why this is happening ?

I have Norton 2008 installed but I have full access to the activate_matlab.exe executable program. I even tried to disable Norton for a couple of minutes.
But this does not make any difference.

Any help would be GREATLY appriciated. I need to have it up and running as soon as possible !!

I'm in the same precise situation, just bought student version of matlab 2008b but I'm unable to activate & use it because of this java.lang.nullpointerexception error while 'Connecting to The Mathworks'.
I'm on Windows Vista x64 SP1, everything is kept updated (Java is v. 6 u7).

Kevin, Stefano,

That error doesn't look familiar to me, and I wasn't able to find anything
that looked related in a quick search of the support website. I recommend
you contact Technical Support so that they can investigate why activation's
not working on your systems. Support is available for Student Version
activation, installation, and bug-related problems; this sounds like it
falls into two of those three categories.

I had the same problem. And i think i have solved it so far...

The problem has something to do with the Windows idiom. I am using spanish and maybe you are using other non-english language.

I solved it changing my regional configuration to english (United States). You can change it in ControlPanel->Regional and idiom configuration->Format and standar. You only have to change it to english (United States). that solved my problem with nullpointer.

I hope it works...

I contacted support but got no reply for this problem.
However, I finally managed to perform the verification process by requesting a license file from the site (active software link in you personal profile options).

There too was an error : you must enter a Machine id, but the popup text as how to find this Machine id is wrong.
For a windows PC: enter vol c: at a command prompt. and anter the 8 hex digits which are than displayed in the Machine id preceeded with a 'DISK_SERIAL_NUM=' prefix.
Example :
DISK_SERIAL_NUM=1236-f8f0

Don't forget the DISK_SERIAL_NUM= prefix or it won't work !

Thanks for all who replied.
